DC General 2022
Version 2.10
MENU
WELCOME TO REDBUG
This resource was developed by a team of socialist artists, web developers, researchers, and political organizers through the Metro DC Democratic Socialists of America. Our goal is to provide DC voters and residents a guide to understanding who's running for local office in DC, who's behind them, and where they stand along a set of issues. REDBUG is a project 100% supported by volunteers and is intended as a resource for DC voters - this is not intended to advocate for specific candidates.
Note that we are aware of a bug on smaller phone screens that can obscure information displayed on the candidate cards. The best way to view this resource is on desktop, but the site should operate without significant issues on most phone browsers.
How should I use this guide?
How should I use this guide?
Browse through the different races, explore context, and take note of different answers. Note that there are more issues than those we track here. For those looking to vote strategically, take note of who has realistic levels of funding and who has endorsed given candidates. Consider: who is more likely to use their office to challenge the system and empower workers?
Candidates designated as "Progressive backed" must have the endorsement of at least 3 organizations we have designated as progressive. Candidates designated as "Labor backed" must have the endorsement of at least 3 labor unions, and must have 90% of identified labor endorsements in the race (note that we do not count the labor councils or DC Police Union as labor organizations).
Are the positions covered here the only ones that matter?
Absolutely not. There are many important issues to consider when voting for local office, and we only had the time to panel responses to issues covered here. Positions identified here - along with relevant endorsements and context provided - should give you a good understanding of how candidates orient towards other important issues. There are also other important local races that are not covered here.

(Please note -- the Council seat for Ward 6 is also up for re-election, but it is uncontested. That will be added back later, but has been temporarily taken down due to an identified bug.)
How can I contest information that's displayed here?
You can submit contested positions or descriptions of candidates USING THIS FORM. The editors of this site will do our best to respond to all credible submissions, and update text listed here. Changes will be found on the CHANGE LOG tab.
Where are you getting your fundraising numbers?
Fundraising numbers are being input from the Office of Campaign Finance's reporting. DC dollars counts all donations from DC residents, money raised from public financing, and non-corporate dollars. Refunds are also subtracted from available funds. Be aware that total dollars raised includes funding received through DC's public finance program.

Some info may be out of sync with what's reported on the OCF website. There are occasionally inconsistencies in finance reporting, but what's reported here tries to reflect the most accurate count of total and available funds.
VOTING INFORMATION

I82 would phase out DC's tipped minimum wage (5.35/hr) and mandate tipped workers are paid at least the minimum wage (16.10/hr) by their employer, with tips on top. The community coalition in support cites research that ending this subminimum wage would insulate workers from wage theft, raise earnings and reduce pay discrimination. Socialists have led an expansive volunteer force across the city to rally DC's working-class in support of the initiative.

Opponents baselessly allege that raising the tipped minimum wage would hurt businesses. The No campaign is financed by a network of corporations and regional restaurant groups who want to keep wages low to pad profit margins and maintain wage power over workers. Corporate actors have dumped over 600 thousand dollars to fight this initiative, and have led a scorched earth campaign intent to threaten workers and confuse the public.

Muriel Bowser assumed office in 2015. Though the city has seen an expansion of housing and city services since 2015, her Administration has largely ignored civic and community activists in the city.
